Hi, I was recently made redundant and am struggling to find a job. I do want to study further and am interested in a course within the Financial Services sector. However, this is the worst hit sector in the recession, but there are so many FS jobs out there. Should I still do this course or is it a no go area.
Thanks
I think a lot of FS job listings appear during recessions because the companies know there’s a larger pool of potential talent who are not working. Furthermore, the fact that they’re correct in this assumption also means there’s a larger pool of the "hungry" – those willing and motivated to "really try hard to succeed."
Some will succeed in the FS jobs because they are motivated AND have sales talent and people skills. They would probably succeed in Sales without a recession, but would probably already be employed.
Most importantly, the initial (probationary) period in FS jobs is often low-pay or no-pay. That’s why they can afford to hire during recession in the first place.
I’d say if you’re really good and motivated, you may do well in Financial Services, even during recession. But, then again, you probably wouldn’t have been out of work in the first place. Who knows? Only you know the answer to THAT quandary!
Hey,
I have checked out some financial advisor/planner jobs and they all require CeFA qualifications etc. But do you need to go to university and backup those qualifications?
No. CeFA is the Certificate in Financial Advice awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute. The usual career path is to get a clerical job with an insurance company while you study for the exams, then get a job as a financial adviser once you’ve qualified.
I’ve graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Finance. I want to have a good start. Where is the best place to start?
it depends where your interests lie and how hard you want to work. Finance is pretty broad and can lead to many different career paths.
If you are looking to make good money and work hard, get a job in investments, preferable for a money manager, Investment bank, or hedge fund.
Working for a bank is not good and it will be a long hard trip up the latter. Banks are extremely bureaucratic, slow moving and are not innovative.
Please list several if you know.
For reference, I have a Bachelor’s in Finance.
It would depend on your degree.

I’d like to work in financial services and I’m willing to take any and all classes that pertain to that. But I just don’t want to sit through the required classes to get a four-year degree. I’d like to earn about $37K per year. I know that sounds low in this day and time, but that’s what I’d like to earn, as material things don’t mean a lot to me. Any suggestions?
I know one – own your own business. LOL. but seriously it is. You can even start your own business without any degree at all. If you are good at numbers and financial services, you should go for a lending corporation or a banking business.
Will this be taken into consideration? At a company like American Express or Edward Jones?
it would depend on who, what, where, when and why for the bankruptcy.
there are legitimate reasons for bankruptcy that have nothing to do with planning or poor credit/investment decisions.
someone with the experience may even be a better advisor since they have the experience of the worse case scenario.
I’m a recent college grad with a BBA in Business: Corporate Finance. I have a 3.8 GPA, but absolutely no relevant work experience (no internship or anything like that).
where do i start?
*budget analyst
*stockbroker
*insurance underwriter
*loan officer
*personal financial advisor
*financial service sales agent
I have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and am working on a master’s in statistics. I want to work in finance, but most jobs require a lot of experience. There must be something I can do to get a foot in the door. Any suggestions?
I’ve taken business/economics courses an an undergraduate and a couple as electives recently. I have no finance experience. I’d like to eventually be a financial analyst.
Well you are certainly blessed to have such a math ability! How about jobs such as accounting assistant, bookkeeper, payroll or billing clerk, or accounts payable/receivable. Perhaps you can check the local hospitals for some of those types of jobs or check the Sunday (day typically most jobs listed) classified ads. It’s great to follow-up on whichever job ad that you answer a few days to a week later, even if there is merely a fax number provided. And you probably are already aware, but always send a cover letter along with the resume. The cover letter expands on one’s resume. Good luck to you!

when i was younger i was stupid and got a couple of DUI convictions on my record. now I’m 27 with a BS degree in Finance and Economics and love those fields. My Q is can i still get a series 7, a CFA designation, or even become a bank manager? I’ve stayed out of trouble with the law for 6 years now. Should I find another career?
Thanks,
Jonathan
Maybe you could be a shtockbrokerrrr.
I know someone who wants to leave her job as a Financial Advisor but as she is being paid a stabilasation fund it seems she has to pay this back…. How is it possible you leave a company and owe them money??? I’m confused
She may have received a sign on bonus when at the firm. She may have not fulfilled the contract to receive this compensation in full she got upfront. Therefore, she has to reimburse the from for breaching the terms of the contract.
Look at the employment contract terms.
Hi,im expecting to graduate my master of financial analysis in June 2008 from an Australian university.I also have a bachelor of business majoring in international business marketing. internships. I am fluent in both Japanese and English and am turning 22 this year. I do not have any finance related working expriences or interships.
However, I really do want to find an entry level job in the US. As long as it is a finance job and a position in the bank/consulting firm, I am happy with it. Does anyone know the chances of gettting sponsored by a US firm for fresh graduates?
THANKS!
Your possibilities are just about zero. – - – Unless you have some very unique skill or background experience. Your Japanese fluency may help —- I’d contact Japanese firms with major offices in the US…….
but it will be difficult if not impossible for you to get legal, permanent residency in the US.

I’m a recent college student with a B.S in Business/Finance and i’m having difficulties finding a job. I’ve applied to mostly banks, but i have only received one call for an interview. I feel monster and careerbuilder and sites like that don’t really work. Where specifically should I look, any companies in particular?
It’s the right time for you to apply in this company.
