    Should I be a Financial Advisor or go back to Sales?

    Posted by admin on July 23rd, 2010 and filed under financial advisor jobs | 1 Comment »

    I just graduated college in management with a minor in marketing and finance. I used to be in sales for a year or so. It was good money. Now, I am moving to Miami and I am thinking about working for a financial firm like Edward Jones and Merrill Lynch. However, my accounting and financing skills and knowledge are fair.

    I always have extra money save up (a few grands now) and always interested in investing and owning assets to make more money. I was told that a financial advisor is the person you need to see for investing needs and future financial planning. For this reason, I want to start an entry-level job at one of these firm as a financial advisor and work my way up through the series 7 test and so on.

    My best work is in sales, however, I find that I eventually become good at everything I do. My concern is that I may not be qualified as the financial advisor job and embarass myself at the interview seeing that I have fair to little financial experience/skills. So, should I go for it or go back into sales?

    Any opinions would be helpful…

    Somewhere I read that financial advisors will be one of the top 10 most in demand fields in the next 20 years.
    Edward Jones will definitively use you.
    All they seem to do is sell life insurance, expensive mutual funds and annuities.

    Eichengreen: The Financial Crisis -1/4

    Posted by admin on July 20th, 2010 and filed under financial advisor jobs | 3 Comments »

    Barry Eichengreen – renowned professor of Economics and Political Science at the University of California Berkeley, former senior advisor to the IMF, author of “Globalizing Capital: A History of the International Monetary System”, and editor of “Rescuing our Jobs and Savings: What G8 Leaders can do to Solve the Global Credit Crisis” – provides a detailed overview of the financial crisis. He discusses at length: (a) the excessive risk undertaken by a variety of financial institutions as a result of gradual deregulation of financial services sector in the second half of 20th century; (b) the role of both Republican and Democratic parties in maintaining deregulation policies following introduction of US President Ronald Reagan’s “free markets” ideology in 1980; (c) the inability of the US to properly manage or channel massive capital inflows from the developing world – especially China – during the last decade; (d) the failure of Bush administration to mount an adequate response to the financial crisis on account of its initial state of denial, financial engineering mindset, and “free markets” ideology; and (e) actions – such as, interest rate increases, deficit reduction, recapitalization of banks, and economic stimulus – that would have greatly mitigated the severity of the financial crisis. In addition, he dwells on: (f) the impact of the financial crisis on American power and globalization, as well as (g) the nature of institutional reforms required at global level to prevent another crisis. This interview was recorded in January 2009.

    What’s it like to work as an Entry-level Edward Jones Financial Advisor?

    Posted by admin on July 14th, 2010 and filed under financial advisor jobs | 1 Comment »

    Pay, work environment, comparing to other similar jobs in other companies, reputation, impact on career, etc

    Edward Jones is as good of a place to start your career as other similar size investment firms. You will get some help with financing your pursuit with Series 63/66, 6 and/or 7.

    On the other hand, if you have choices to go to a larger firm like Merrill Lynch, Fidelity etc, you should definitely go to a larger firm. Large firms have development programs that put you through various training and roles between 2-3 years. You will get a lot more learning and exposure to the business.

    Best wishes.

    I’m interviewing for a job this week at a financial services firm in manhattan…..?

    Posted by admin on July 11th, 2010 and filed under financial services jobs | 3 Comments »

    I’m interviewing for a job this week, and if I were to get it, I wouldn’t be able to start until 6 weeks from now because I have a vacation scheduled in 5 weeks. Do you think this will be a deal breaker?

    Why don’t you just make arrangements to have the week off for vacation? Let them know up front (if you receive an offer) that you have a vacation scheduled and will need that week off. I’m sure it wouldn’t be a problem.

    Who knows "industrial alliance" insurance and finance company and their financial securities advisor position?

    Posted by admin on July 11th, 2010 and filed under financial advisor jobs | 1 Comment »

    I just got a chance to work in its Ottawa office as a financial advisor. I have no clear idea of this company and this position. I am a MBA graduate and actively looking for a job. Is this a good company? Thanks a lot!!

    Not to burst the bubble but no…for you. The company is a fine & reputibale one but as an MBA you could do much better. A finacial advisor position typically just means "glorified life insurance salesman". Typically you wouldn’t need a high-school diploma to get this position. Keep looking!

    What experience does this job description want? Financial Services Company?

    Posted by admin on July 8th, 2010 and filed under financial services jobs | 1 Comment »

    I am applying for a job for a Financial Services company. I don’t really understand what the job description mean, what kind of experience they want, can someone please tell me what this description means?

    - Review projected cash position of managed portfolios and calculate the amount to be transferred between accounts, placed for time deposits or arranged to have Foreign Exchange;

    - Prepare and send cash instructions to bank;

    - Monitor settlement status of cash activities;

    - Liaise with banks in cash settlement issues;

    - Record transactions into investment system (Portia);

    - Interact and support Fund Managers/Central Dealer/Regional offices for cash activities.

    What kind of cash management/activities experience do they want?

    Frankly, if you don’t understand the job description, this job is not for you. It won’t make sense to apply to it. Very often employers write ads with jargon that only people in their business know. If you don’t know it, that means you are not the person they look for. This ad doesn’t consist any jargon, but if you know what fund managers and central dealers do, you would know their requirement. However it will take time to explain the whole process.
